Gum Hygiene Treatment

Keeping gums healthy is key to the overall health of your teeth and mouth. At Broseley Dental Practice we will always take extra care to examine your gums and prevent disease.

The gums support your teeth, holding them in place and acting as a barrier to bacteria. A healthy gum is pink and firm. However, over time plaque can build-up on the gum line, making the gums vulnerable to infection and disease. Smoking, a sugary diet, overlapping teeth, diseases such as diabetes and certain medications can also cause gum disease.

There are two stages of gum disease. The first is gingivitis and symptoms include bleeding of the gums, inflammation and soreness. You may also experience an infection of the gums and if left untreated, your gums could start to recede back from the teeth.

The second stage of gum disease is periodontitis. This can be extremely serious and, if left untreated, could cause the teeth to loosen or even fall out.

It is very important to treat the early signs of gum disease. For example, if you experience bleeding after brushing or flossing you may want to use a specially formulated mouthwash to try and treat this, as well as brushing and flossing more thoroughly.

If this issue has not resolved after a few weeks, it is important to visit Broseley Dental Practice so we can examine your gums. Our thorough cleaning techniques will also help to prevent gum disease.

Our team is always happy to provide advice on how to care for your gums at home.
